Why does zuko like mai

She just yawns and pulls herself next to him. She then tells him to stop worrying and embraces him in an attempt to make him feel better. He also suspects that Aang survived his run in with Azula back in Ba Sing Se, and does his best to hide that fact.

He also sneaks out to visit Iroh in his prison, a fact that Azula eventually becomes aware of. When Azula goes to confront Zuko about his visit with Iroh, she breaks up a lovely picnic between him and Mai.

When Zuko tells her to leave them be, Azula feeds Mai a line about how Ty Lee needs help with her hair. While attending a party and seeing another boy flirt with Mai, Zuko lets his temper get the better of him. You blow up over every little thing. As opposed to you! You have no passion for anything! The two part ways for a bit, eventually meeting up with Azula and Ty Lee at a bonfire on the beach. Despite their feelings for each other, the communication between them needs a lot of work.

So after the exchange Mai goes on to talk about why she has always been so quiet. Having never been allowed to be happy or excited as a child, she became resigned to boredom and silence.

Zuko then states that he likes that side of her, and goes to sit next to Mai before being quickly reprimanded by her. Why are you mad? Who are you mad at? The two then make up and seem to be happy once again. For you see, soon after their vacation Zuko come to the conclusion that he has, in fact, made a mistake by betraying his uncle and joining the Fire Nation. A mistake he intends to fix by leaving him home and joining Aang and the rest of the Gaang to help them stop his father.

This brings us to Sokka and his quest to break Suki out of prison. There he was placed in a cell to await the arrival of whatever punishment that would befall him.

He only did what he did to protect her. When a guard came to warn Mai and look out for her Zuko used to moment to escape, locking his ex-girlfriend in the very cell he was just thrown into. Before he left to escape though, the two shared a brief moment through the thin slot in the door of the cell. With Zuko showing genuine remorse for the way things had transpired. Zuko, Sokka, Suki and a few others eventually make their escape from the prison, but not before running afoul of Azula and Ty Lee who had traveled over to the island alongside Mai.

At this point, things were looking pretty grim, as neither Zuko nor Sokka had any way to stop their eventual plummet into the lake of boiling hot water below them. And upon seeing Zuko escape to freedom, allowed herself to be captured. As you might imagine though, this did NOT go over well with Azula; who promptly accused Mai of treason and demanded to know who why she would ever betray her. It is in this brief moment that we truly understand just how much Zuko means to Mai, as she is willing to sacrifice herself in order to save his life.

Because to cross Azula is to risk death or worse. Azula became furious with Mai. Azula moved to strike Mai down, as Mai moved to strike back…. But they were both caught off guard when Ty Lee, the one who usually did her best to keep everyone happy, intervened and chi-blocked Azula; rendering her limp and defeated on the floor.

In such shock over what had just happened, Mai and Ty Lee were quickly overwhelmed by guards and brought before the now helpless Azula. They both must do what they feel is right for themselves and each other, and then live with the consequences. The lesson here, folks, is that great relationships are built by two individual people who each have their own lives. They choose to share their lives with one another and build upon each other, sure, but only once each of them has become the whole and healthy individual they need to be.

Only by leaving Mai, betraying his country and helping Aang restore balance to the world was he able to finally live with himself. Only then, after all that, was he truly able to be with Mai. Likewise, despite her un-emotive personality and general lack of caring about a great many things. This page is comprised of Mai 's relationships with other characters in the world of Avatar.

Mai shared a series of complex relationships with others, often stemming from conflicting personalities. Mai was born into one of the wealthiest families in the Fire Nation , her father, Ukano , being a prominent politician [2] who eventually became the governor of Omashu , later renamed New Ozai.

As Ukano's only child for a while, Mai was expected to behave properly among the politicians in order to ensure her father's respectability was preserved.

As a result, she was taught to keep her opinions and emotions to herself; her personal needs were always second to her parents'. Mai leaving her defeated father , taking Tom-Tom with her.

Mai eventually encountered her father again, following her breakup with Zuko during the events of the Harmony Restoration Movement. Discovering him to be the leader of the " New Ozai Society ", a movement loyal to Fire Lord Ozai , whose aim was to restore him to the throne and to overthrow the "usurper", Zuko, she protested his actions. The animosity between father and daughter grew, as Ukano desired Mai to join him, deeming her to be a valuable asset to his organization due to her knowledge about Zuko.

However, Mai did not agree with him and was further incensed by the fact that he had included Tom-Tom in his organization. In defiance, she took Tom-Tom with her and severed her ties with her father, [4] though she kept track of his actions and actively worked to thwart them. When she encountered him a next time, she called him and his beliefs "insane", though nonetheless allowed him to escape.

She did not say he was involved until it was extremely necessary and, when saying goodbye to him due to his imprisioment, decided to remind his bravery for cutting ties with Azula. Coming from a wealthy family, Mai was spoiled as long as she remained in line and her mother Michi encouraged her to indulge in their riches.

While Michi expressed deep regret at her husband's endangerment of their children and was content to be living with her children at Mura's, Mai remained indifferent. Mai taking Tom-Tom with her to avoid his indoctrination. Mai's little brother, Tom-Tom, was born two years prior to the return of Avatar Aang.

During their stay in Omashu, her family agreed to exchange the imprisoned King Bumi for Tom-Tom, who accidentally wound up with the Avatar's group when they fled Omashu.

During the exchange, Mai appeared eager to get her brother back, but Princess Azula criticized that trading a powerful earthbender king for a toddler was foolish. After considering this prospect, Mai unhesitatingly let the Avatar's group keep Tom-Tom, demonstrating a callous disregard for her baby brother. Upon seeing her, Tom-Tom was very happy to see his sister, whom he had been missing very much.

She embraced her brother and voiced anger at the fact that her father had brought him to a place where the movement was hoarding weapons for battle, exhibiting a strong sense of protectiveness over him not displayed a year before.

When her father urged her to join the movement against Zuko, Mai collected her brother and fought off the loyalists who tried to capture her as she attempted to escape, and quickly defeated the entire group before she or her brother came to harm.

After fleeing the scene, she returned to her aunt Mura's flower shop where she worked with Tom-Tom in close company. Tom-Tom demonstrated concern for his older sister as she sulked over a picture of herself and Zuko together. Weeks later, Mai reunited with Ty Lee and repeated her disgust of how her father had endangered Tom-Tom by involving him in the New Ozai Society rebellion. When her brother was kidnapped several weeks later by the Kemurikage , Mai tried to save him, though failed.

However, her desire to protect him was greater than her anger with Zuko, as she agreed to enlist his help to rescue Tom-Tom. Mai appeared to have a strong relationship with the warden , her uncle. He seemed to care deeply about her state of happiness as he was more than willing to inform her, as opposed to the Fire Lord, of Zuko's capture at the Boiling Rock , deeming it a punishment for his abandonment.

Mura was a compassionate aunt toward Mai and tried to cheer her up by hiring her to work at the shop after her breakup with Zuko.

She expressed much excitement toward her niece when she was asked out on a date by Kei Lo , as when Tom-Tom tried to show his sister the flower from their aunt, Mura told him not to bother her because she believed Mai was thinking about the good time she had the night before on her date. Mai and Zuko.

As children of the Fire Nation royal court, Mai and Zuko were acquaintances. She harbored feelings for him as a younger child, blushing when she caught sight of him walking by. When he saw the potential danger, Zuko ran to get the apple off Mai's head, and in doing so ended up knocking both of them into a fountain. After the Avatar was thought dead, the princess and Ty Lee arranged a date between the two when Zuko voiced reluctance to return to the Fire Nation.

The couple quickly unfolded the ruse and set off to explore the city. When they ran into Jin , Mai decided to play along when Zuko told Jin she was a knife thrower at the circus where they performed. During an attempt to perform the same act, Jin nearly hit Zuko, causing him to fall into the fountain. She proceeded to lean over him with a smug smile and whisper, "Now we're even.

Being in Zuko's presence tended to bring out a more passionate side of Mai. Her normally pessimistic, dull attitude was overshadowed by a show of happiness and affection when she spent time with him. They soon got back together after confessing their issues. Zuko does the same with her, calling her on her sense of apathy towards things.

It can be contentious at times but needed. Despite Katara still having a full-on hatred for him, Zuko still tried to help her avenge her mother, helping track down and take out the southern raiders with her. He even helped give her the chance for revenge, forcing Yon Rha to remember her face. That moment was the true turning point to Zuko's character and shows what an impact Katara had on his character.

More than anyone else, she helped him see the good inside of himself, made him realize he isn't his father. This is a strange one to put when you considering we are speaking about relationships, but it's something that's entirely needed if you truly care about another person. There comes a time when you need to put both their needs and happiness over that of your own.

If you don't bring them that happiness any longer, sometimes it's ok to let them go. That's what they've both done on separate occasions, Zuko even being ok with Mai's conflicted feelings between him and Kei Lo. Zuko eventually finds his during the post-show comics, but for most of the series, they'd both felt their mother had been lost because of the war. The common bond led to a great scene while they were trapped beneath the Earth King's palace. Katara offered to heal Zuko's scar and it looked like Zuko was on the verge of switching sides.

That ended up not being the case, but that talk helped push him on his way to seeing how wrong his father was. It also showed some of the care the two could have for each other. While in some ways this makes it seem like that might balance each other out, it also means they could get on each other's nerves often. As we see in the episode on the beach, Zuko gets fed up with her lack of feeling, and she gets tired of his dramatics.

Mai is an emo type of person and Zuko is dramatic and emo in his own way. However, they seem more like a couple that would have been together in their youth but would not have lasted.

There's still a chance they could have ended up together, but the creators haven't said for sure. In fact, there's no confirmation about who the mother of Izumi actually was.
